Statement from the Sisters at Malling Abbey about the Proposed Bellway Development

29 July 2019

We, the Sisters of the Malling Abbey Community, are working in partnership with the local Parish Councils and the Protect West Malling group to oppose the proposed Bellway development. We all agree it would be detrimental to both the life of the village and of the Abbey. We would like to thank all those who have supported and encouraged us recently.

As contemplative Benedictines we understand the need for spaciousness, solitude and God-centred quiet. An important part of our life is hospitality and we welcome over 1000 residential guests a year without making any charge. These guests come for a retreat and especially need quiet and solitude and a space to reconnect with the natural world. It is for these guests and the many hundreds who come for a day retreat that we are opposing the proposed Bellway development.

The local Parish Councils and the Protect West Malling group have set up a crowdfunding appeal that can be found at www.crowdjustice.com/case/protectlavendersroad
