With the opening of our new Abbey Garth guest wing and the closure of our former guest house, 2016 has brought significant changes in our hospitality. All of our accommodation is now self-catering; further information can be found below.
Groups and individual day guests are now accommodated at the St. Benedict's Centre:
Booking a Visit
We accept bookings for visits from 2 to 7 nights. We are open every night of the week. Please use the enquiry form below to tell us a little about what you are looking for from your visit and with some dates (in order of preference) that would suit you.
All of our accomodation is now self-catering. We provide bread, cereals, milk (including soya) and basic store-cupboard items for breakfast and supper. There is a selection of frozen ready-meals available for purchase in the Abbey Garth kitchen. The high street with a small Tesco and many other shops and cafés is 5 minutes walk away. Sheets, towels and soap are provided for all guests.
Parking space is available in our private car park, off Swan Street, for the Abbey Garth and Thomas Becket. Parking for St. Michael's Cottage is accessed from Lavender's Road (first right down Swan Street from the main entrance), through the large wooden gates.
Coded locks on the gate and the entrance to the Abbey Garth mean that you can come and go as you please at any time without having to make special arrangements with the guest sister.
Mobile phone reception at the Abbey is patchy and we ask that mobile phones not be used inside the buildings, so as not to disturb other guests. There is a phone for emergency use in the Abbey Garth kitchen / dining room.
We make no charge but we gratefully accept donations to help cover costs.
Arrivals and Departures
Arrivals are between 2.00 pm and 4.30 pm and rooms must be vacated by 9.30 am on the day of departure(5.00 pm Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays) or by arrangement at the time of booking.
The four rooms in the Abbey Garth are on the first floor and access is by stairs only. Each room has en-suite shower and toilet and facilities for making hot drinks.
There is a fully equipped kitchen / dining room with gas hob, electric oven, microwave, fridge and freezer.
Silence is kept from after Compline (7.45 pm) until 10.30 am the following morning. At other times talking is confined to the kitchen / dining room.
Thomas Becket (Gate House)
This historic room is up a steep, narrow staircase on its own in the Gatehouse. It is not suitable if you have mobility problems. There is an en-suite bath and wash basin but the toilet is downstairs. Facilities for making hot drinks are available but meals are prepared and eaten in the Abbey Garth kitchen / dining room.
St. Michael's Cottage
This is a self-contained, two-bedroom (one double, one single) cottage with its own garden, behind the Abbey Church. We use it mainly for family visits but on occasion it is made available to other guests. The kitchen has a table-top electric cooker with oven and hot-plates. and a small fridge with ice box. The bathroom has a bath with a shower over.
Please ensure that the guest sister knows when you are arriving so that the Lavender's Road gate is left open for you. Once you are here you will be given a key for this gate to come and go as you please.
